Microsoft to offer a Kinect-less Xbox One from June

Last week Microsoft announced that it would be selling its Xbox One console without the Kinect from June. This will surely attract new customers to the platform, as it will now be the same price as the PlayStation 4, but what does it mean for those who already have the Kinect?

I for one was happy when Microsoft announced that the Kinect would come with every Xbox One, because it would mean that developers would find novel ideas on how to use it, but now it seems that it may be a missed opportunity for Microsoft again.

The Kinect 2 is a great bit of kit, I use it all the time to do my workouts using Xbox Fitness and it works really well. The voice recognition is also very good and the face recognition is leaps ahead of the original Kinect. Although developers hadn’t really innovated their products for the Kinect, usually just using the voice recognition, there was the possibility that if every Xbox One owner had a Kinect that the possibility to do something really unique was there.

But now it seems that the Kinect 2 might just turn into a party game product just like the original, only having a select few games (which are usually rubbish) to utilise the technology. It remains to be seen if people will still buy the system with the Kinect when the newest bundle come out, but I’m guessing that people will choose the cheaper alternative.

The E3 conference starts in a few weeks and it’ll be interesting to see if there are any decent Kinect games coming to the market in the future that might persuade people to get one, but I have a feeling that it’s a lost opportunity for Microsoft.

What do you think? Do you like the Kinect or is it just a fad? Leave your comments below.
