My Christmas Gifts

I still do get some childish excitement from opening presents especially when I don’t know what I am getting. To keep things simple my brother got me some Amazon vouchers so I can buy some new games or some new tech.

One gift I wasn’t happy with was a onesie from my wife, she found it hilarious though. Needless to say I still haven’t tried it on yet! She also got me some WiFi bathroom scales. These ultra-sleek looking scales record your weight, fat mass and BMI and then beam the information to your computer or phone. Unfortunately for me quite a lot of weight is being beamed to my computer at the moment! One thing which is really good about it is that you can use it in conjunction with some weight loss programmes.

Although it may seem like the wife jibbed out on the gift front we are looking online when the sales hit to buy me some new camera lenses and cases etc. its just before Christmas the prices can be quite high. So because there are a number of thinks I want for my camera we thought it would be best to order them when sales start.

When my mother did the Christmas shopping the shop assistant thought that she was doing it for her teenage son (She doesn’t do online shopping). Apparently Farcry 3, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Xbox Live 2100 Microsoft Points and Bradley Wiggins: My Time: An Autobiography is what many parents have been buying for their teenage boys.

Alternative Christmas Songs Res Hippy

So I like a good Christmas tune as much as the next man but sometimes you find that you are saturated with the same songs all the time, so recently I created an Alternative Christmas List:

Mason Jennings – Santa Claus is Coming To Town
Jack Johnson – Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
Pet Shop Boys – It Doesn’t Often Snow At Christmas (New Version)
Sufjan Stevens – Sister Winter
Sufjan Stevens – Silent Night
The Flaming Lips – Christmas At The Zoo
Mother & The Addicts – Oh God It’s Christmas
blink-182 – I Won’t Be Home For Christmas
The Fall – Hark The Herald Angels Sing – Peel Session 17/12/94
The Ramones – Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight Tonight)
Galaxie 500 – Listen, The Snow Is Falling
The Smashing Pumpkins – Christmastime
Hurts – All I Want For Christmas Is New Year’s Day
The Killers – Boots
Pearl Jam – Let Me Sleep (It’s Christmas Time)
Glasvegas – A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss)
RUN-DMC – Christmas In Hollis
The Futureheads – Christmas Was Better In The 80′s
Lucky Soul – Lonely This Christmas
Poly Styrene – Black Christmas
Hot Club De Paris – Will You Still Be In Love With Me Next Year?
Idiot Glee – Baby, It’s Cold Outside
James Yuill – Winter Wonderland
Slow Club – Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
Sufjan Stevens – O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Julian Casablancas – I Wish It Was Christmas Today
The Waitresses – Christmas Wrapping (Single Edit)
The Raveonettes – The Christmas Song
Low – Just Like Christmas
The Long Winters – Christmas With You Is The Best
Leona Naess – Christmas
Jimmy Eat World – Last Christmas – Studio Version
Eels – Christmas Is Going To The Dogs

Many of them are covers of well-known Christmas songs, but they have added their own vibe which I like. Some are also original Christmas songs, which again is great and makes a change from the usual Christmas songs you are inundated with.

Hopefully I can have this on over Christmas and on Christmas Day if the wife lets me, but she is a sucker for the usual Christmas songs.

Family time at Christmas

Since our house had been slowly done up over this past year and we have our garden room, we decided it would be ‘nice’ to have the family round. Next week my brother and his partner are coming up to stay. They will be leaving before Christmas Day itself, so we will be have a pre-Christmas, Christmas dinner with them two.

My brother and his partner are moving on and spending Christmas day in a log cabin in the Lake District, weather permitting. They have been together for 9 months now at least and this will be their first Christmas together since meeting on a dating site. I am honestly surprised that he met someone so normal on a dating site, but you never know!

My mother and her partner will be round on Christmas Eve hopefully before my brother goes so they can have a catch up, then we are ‘lucky’ enough to have them for Christmas dinner before they bugger off on boxing day and not a moment too soon that will be! Unfortunately with the festive season it does involve a trip to see the mother in law (MiL), unless I’m really sick there won’t be any getting out of it for me! The MiL doesn’t like me that much, thinks I’m lazy well I worked hard when I was young so can damn well be lazy now. Anyway she can’t moan too much since I’ve cut down on the pot.

Anyway after that torture is over, comes the highlight of my holiday season, my dad is coming over from South Africa for New Years. I am so excited, it’s been over a year since we have seen him and I can’t wait to catch up. Have a load of beers and ring in the New Year in our typical sizzled state! It will be hard seeing him go; although SA isn’t too far away it’s quite a ball ache getting over there. I just wish he lived closer but my damn mother drove him away! And now I’m stuck seeing her on a far too frequently basis grrr!

Celebrating Guy Fawkes

So I dragged my arse out on Friday night to go watch the bonfire display at our local football club again. It was a big turn out like last year which is really good. I forgot to check to see who the effigy was this year as I was in the club house having a few beers so missed the lighting of the fire. I did get out for the display though which was a showcase. The wife didn’t go this year as she is sick with some sort of cold/flu but she did have dinner waiting on the table for me when I got home slightly pissed (good woman).

On Friday Leeds travelled to Brighton which saw us draw 2 each, Brighton nearly did get a goal by us in the 74th minute thanks to a penalty but it was saved, phew. It’s a shame we couldn’t get a win, but a draw is better than a loss. Still in 12th place with three other teams on 20 points too. We really need to push ourselves up. It’s like we have the capabilities but always fall short when we shouldn’t be, typical Leeds.

Halo 4 will be arriving on Tuesday, so that’s me fixed until the 13th when Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is out. Think I am going to aim to get as much of this game completed as I can before Call of Duty comes out otherwise it may just get left to the dust, as F1 seems to be, although the F1 is on tomorrow so no doubt I will have a little play after like I normally do!

Anyway with bonfire night out of the way, next up is Christmas, so I really should get myself sorted or at least get the wife to sort me out!

Poor bank holiday weekend

Unfortunately the rain kept coming this bank holiday weekend, so the wife and I decided to sort out our paperwork and get our finances in order. I have recently been on a bit of a spending spree so keeping on top of all that wasn’t easy and in the mist of my new car and buying a garden room we just about forgot about the wife’s car and the fact that it needed a MOT, taxing and insuring again for another year.

I’m not too chuffed at having to pay out for the missus car, so will be looking to get a cheap MOT test after all the plan was to get a new one before all this stuff came up, but we just forgot. So once her car is sorted and our finances are sorted then it will be time to go car shopping again, although there is not much chance of me spending as much money on a new car for her as I did for myself!

I was hoping to do some work in the garden but the fact that it kept pissing it down yesterday and that I had a stinking hangover rather put me off, so instead spent the afternoon slobbing out on the sofa, watching football and playing the Xbox, not bad really.

Well with Leeds season now over and a loss for our final game our position and GD really sums up how dire this season has been. Mediocre really from players and manager but nothing a good influx of cash wouldn’t have helped. Unless something changes next season then I fear we will be looking at similar dismal results if not worse.

Also its going to be a bit of a close call for the Premier League both Manc teams level on points only Citeh are ahead on goal difference will laugh if they win just by goal difference cause that will be really annoying for Manure tee hee!

Making an effort for my wife’s birthday

It’s my wife’s birthday on Saturday and as we have had a hectic week this week with the garden room and cleaning I thought I would take her out for a fancy meal in Leeds. I have also bought her a beautiful bracelet from Pandora which she has been wanting for a while. So she is in for a right treat, plus we haven’t been out for a meal in ages so I am sure she will appreciate it.

There are a lot of restaurants in Leeds and so many different cuisines to choose that it was hard deciding where to go as I wanted to keep it a surprise. However I do know the missus isn’t too adventurous with her food and before Christmas she went to Bibis with the girls and really liked it there so I got us in there! It’s not too pricy although because I am paying I am sure she will order the most expensive item on there! They do have a really extensive menu though and reviews seem to be good so hopefully it will be a good evening.

The garden room is nearly finished now only took a day or so to get it up, just a few last minute bits to finish off then some tidying up to do around in the garden for me whilst the wife goes shopping for some new pots and plants and garden furniture, exciting! Will try and get some pictures up when its all done and looking good to see the final product.

Glorious spring weather and clocks moving forward

This weekend we were treated to some lovely weather, unseasonably warm still for this time of year, which was perfect because the wife and I had a wedding to attend which I mentioned the other day. You couldn’t really ask for better weather at this time of year. We were a bit worried on Saturday because it was quite foggy most of the day, however Sunday was much clearer.

What was nice for this wedding is that I had managed to download SkyGo for my android phone, so during the boring bits of the wedding I could catch up with the F1 highlights, much to my wife’s and the other wives disdain as a group of us converged in a corner. It was quite a good show in Malaysia quite exciting with all the rain and I really didn’t think Alonso would get it and it’s been a while for him and Ferrari to put on a good show. Hopefully I can catch the next race at home rather than on a small mobile not really ideal viewing, was lucky the hotel had a good Wi-Fi signal at least.

Football wise the game on Saturday wasn’t really anything to write home about, we were lucky that Millwall’s penalty was saved because I am not sure we would have pulled a win out of the hat even thought there was still a good 25 minutes left. But at least we got a win still won’t do us much good now this season as we flounder around tenth place.

Anyway I will sign off now so I can enjoy a bit more of the sun today, before the wife makes me do more gardening this week. :)

First wedding of the year

Well we have had the first signs of spring and so arrive the wedding season. Luckily the friends of ours who are getting married this weekend will most probably enjoy really good weather, not something they expected when booking, hence the day was planned inside. The country house where it is all taking place will no doubt be making the most of the seasonably warm weather and allowing drinks on the terrace (that sounds so posh).

The wife has had a busy week preparing for this wedding, as most women do, she had an outfit all ready but the change in the weather changed her mind on it and she went and bought a new outfit. Not to mention visiting hairdressers in London to get a new do! It is such an expense well for me as the new dress came out of my pocket because I made the mistake of accompanying her (never again).

Me? Well, all I need to do is pull out my good old suit give it an airing and I’m ready to go. It should fit last outing was to some fancy Christmas ball and it was fine then and I have been quite healthy recently. Oh I also went to get my hair sorted, only a trim though and can guarantee it cost a lot less than the missus trip cost!

Forgot to mention she also needed some new jewellery (note to all men never question why), the stuff she had didn’t go with the outfit so there was a visit to the jewellers in Sheffield (again I should have stayed at home), honestly I can see why weddings are expensive not only for those getting married but for the guests too!

One final gripe and then I’m done is how expensive peoples wedding lists are, some of the stuff they wanted was better than what we have, I tried to put my foot down but it did no good as the wife put us down for some fancy kitchen mixer! I wouldn’t mind but both these people have been married before and already have their own home, surely they already have this stuff?

Okay over for now, we have at least another three weddings this year, god help my bank balance!

Winning on the gift front

I am happy to say that the Valentines gifts went down a treat. The wife was happy to receive a bottle of her favourite perfume as she had just about finished her last bottle and I got extra points because I opted for the large bottle. She also loved the scarf but was surprised I had managed to choose something to her tastes myself (I didn’t mention the helpful shop assistant!).

I was chuffed with the external hard drive she got me, boring I know but I have been nagging for one. It’s not the most romantic gift but was needed mainly for our holiday snaps, anyway us blokes aren’t bothered about gifts anyway!

The thing is with Valentine’s Day gifts it’s the thought that counts. But, honestly, it’s really not thoughtful to buy your better half a terrible gift-on Valentine’s Day or ever. Personal as a rule I don’t drop cash on any of the cutesy-bad or clueless-gross presents you can get. No one wants them.

Here’s a list I made of no, no gifts for Valentine’s Day, did anyone get something off this list??

A coupon for any kind of love based activity or chore based activity. You know they won’t get cashed in, ever especially those sex vouchers!

Self-help books are bad in general but defiantly not gift options. Can be easily taken too personally!

Knives should not be given as gifts, its bad luck. According to some ancient philosophies knives and sharp objects like scissors and swords send harsh energy and are meant to sever the relationship with the receiver.

Exercise/ diet gifts these can lead to many misunderstandings, even if said person wants the exercise equipment, workout DVDs, and running shoes. Argument ensures!
Edible/Candy underwear, just no, never.

Gimmicky ‘joke’ gifts are a waste of money will end up in bin within a week.

Anything that could be considered a small appliance, normally for the kitchen, she really wont appreciate it easier to buy it when she wants it, not as a gift for an occasion.

Anything which you the gift giver will get more use/enjoyment out of!

Making a will

After sorting out our insurance this I thought it was time that the wife and I sort out our wills. We don’t have any children to leave our stuff to but there will always be family around and to make it easy for them we want everything sorted out in case the worst happens. Our grand plan is to spend our fortunes into old age so no greedy government or council can get their hands on it and just leaving the bare minimum such as personal possession and trinkets etc.

The thing is we don’t want our family to fight over what we leave so the hard task when doing our will, will be deciding who gets what and who would want what! We have an appointment at our solicitors in Birmingham tomorrow who will help us draw up our wills. It’s not a cheap process using a solicitor but we feel in the long run will be the safest option because of all the different legalities that come when you dies, especially the biggy, inheritance tax!

Although we are both hoping to live into old age, you never know what might happen so all eventualities have to be covered, at least knowing our wills, will be safely stored at our solicitors Manchester for when the family need them and for when we need to change them.
